WITCHCRAFT: WHO KILLS, THE ACTORS OR THE ACT

Of recent the adamawa state police command has paraded 1,184 suspects arrested for various offences. Among the suspects were 21 who were arrested at Dason watiye village of Fufore local government area of Adamawa state for killing 7 people whom they believed were practicing   witchcraft. All that were killed were above 50 years, surprisingly two of the victims suffered more in hands of their biological sons.

The suspected witches were beaten to dead by angry youth of the community after series of timely deaths falling on their youth and well to do in the community. As a result prevent prayers and fasting were observed and a pointer shows that act witchcraft is genesis of mysterious deaths suffered by the community.

Confessing before the press the leader of the suspects arrested said they lost over 80 promising members of community within few months, thereby forcing them to look for a solution. The suspected witches were beaten to death with big sticks.

21 Arrested  Dason Bwatiye Youth

The action taken wasn’t appropriate, because youth took law into their hands. That is against the laws of the land. Cases of witch craft are common especially in the rural areas.  But to understand how it works is always the big question. Because of it complicity and the need for solution from members of the public the position sarkin mayu witchcraft doctor was provided in almost all our communities especially in northern Nigeria. In addition customary courts have a specialty to identify, arrest and prosecute those found wanting

It is strongly believed that witches and wizards are everywhere and they killed at will secretly hence the challenges of identifying them easily.

The incident of Dason Bwatiye wasn’t pleasant at all, therefore it is imperative for a legislature to cover this problem that has been killing us for centuries. There is need for faith based organizations and civil society organizations, the media and traditional institutions to come together to  put an end to this ugly act as it is done in Europe and America.

The 21 arrested suspect will be prosecuted for sure, their actions have affected their life, had it been that they follow due process they would have escape the situation they found themselves in. Is good to be law abiding citizen. Don’t take law into your hands.
